Have you checked out Volunteer Match yet?

I just had to share the Volunteer Match love with you...I've been using it for a couple of years now and it is a really helpful site if you like to volunteer. You just plug in your zip code or town/city and you can check out a ton of opportunities. For us knitters, things like knitting projects abound, but also unique experiences like teaching a knitting class to homeless people, hanging out (and knitting) with children of battered women so they can take care of things or get a break, or even donating yarn to prisons. Check it out, there are even virtual opportunities if you don't have time to get out and about.
