Single Crochet Stitch, Photo + Video Tutorial

single crochet stitch

The single crochet stitch is one of the most fundamental basic stitches used in crochet.  Once you’ve mastered it, stitches like double crochet and treble crochet are a piece of cake!  In patterns is is usually abbreviated “sc”  In the photo above, I’ve worked up a small swatch of single crochet to give you an idea of what it looks like. It makes a dense and sturdy fabric and it is especially great when you need something simple with no decorative holes.

Let’s zoom in and get a closer look at our single crochet swatch to begin,

Begin by inserting your hook into the stitch (be sure to go into both loops of the stitch),

Wrap the yarn around the hook (this can sometimes be referred to as yarn over or yarn around the hook),

And then bring up a loop. You’ll now have two loops on your hook like this:

Wrap yarn around the hook again,

Now bring it through both loops this time.  You’ll have one loop left on your hook this time. All done, that’s it, you’ve made a single crochet stitch!

Now continue across the row for a little practice and you’ll be an expert in no time! It helps to make little swatches like the one shown below to practice. To move from row to row, simply work a chain one at the end of the row when you get there, then turn your work and keep going.

If you focus on the technique and quality of the stitches, the speed will come naturally as you practice more and more.

  1. Oi vim fazer uma visitinha lindo seu blog, muito bom gosto beijos tenha um resto de semana abençoado!

  2. I have a couple of questions, please. When you make your original chain, do you have to skip any chains to start the first row??…or just start in the first chain?? Do you need to chain any at the end of each row??

Love your blog and have gotten several of my friends hooked on it, also!!

    1. Hi Cathy! Those are great questions! When you begin, make your chain and length you want, then make the first single crochet stitch in the second chain from the hook. Single crochet in each stitch across the row, including the very last chain.

That is what I did for the swatch above for a simple single crochet swatch. However if you are working from a pattern, the instructions may vary depending on what you are making.

I hope my answer helped! Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂

    2. One more thing…do you think it would be helpful to add full instructions to make the swatch above? That might help too? I can add it if it would.

    3. Yes, teaching the entire swatch would be very helpful for me. I love that you are taking the time to do this for those of us just learning!

  3. Great instructions! One thing I have problems with is keeping my edges straight on the sides of my work. It is a challenge for me to know if I am going into the right stitch to end off the row. I am getting better but sometimes it is hard to see where that last stitch should go.~Patti

  4. I have trouble seeing where the point of the crochet hook goes into the stitch since it has two "loops". A swatch demo would be great!

    1. Hi there! Just added a video to this tutorial, you can click on it above…in the video I make a swatch, hope that helps! 🙂
