Well…it’s finished! A few months ago, I posted about the Ground Cover Public Art Project. I just finished the blanket I will be sending out today for the project. In a nutshell, 300 blankets were made by volunteers all over the country either knitting, crocheting, or quilting them. They are constructed in squares each representing a “pixel” of color to form the picture below:
Blankets will be joined together and laid over a vacant parking lot to cover it, hence the name “Ground Cover”. Above is a computer-simulated photo of how it will look all put together. After the event, blankets will be distributed to the homeless in the area.
When I first got my packet, there was even a color-card of the yarn/fabric to be used, so the picture gets pieced together correctly. My blanket was part of the brown background over on the left side.
The artist who created and has been organizing the event, Ann Morton, has been really lovely and the whole thing was fun to participate in, it was really organized and well run too.
Being an art lover myself (I was a painter ages ago), I love how this project, through the means of creative expression, brings people together to help out others. Plus, when you need it most, something handmade can provide so much comfort.
