Because Creative Accidents Are Good Things

Frog.  For non-yarnies this word evokes images of a green amphibian, perhaps perched up on a twig, rubbery little leg dangling down.  For folks like us, it can create feelings of extreme panic...perhaps a dropped stitch or a row worked incorrectly...the realization that your project is not what you expected it to be.

The other day, I posted this tutorial about safely ripping back you knitting.  The tutorial was inspired by my beautiful and prized rosewood needle breaking in half:

Instantly.  Unapologetically.  Am I being dramatic?  Probably...but I am now thankful for that happening because it taught me a very important lesson.  Repeat after me...accidents and mistakes are OK!  They really are.  I was all set to yank the needle out, toss it, rip back, replace it with a metal needle and carry on with my life.  Instead, I thought about it for a bit and got inspired to share a tutorial.  I slowly and carefully went about it, snapping pictures and turning it into a wonderful (and surprising) creative experience.

If we allow for these "happy accidents" we not only take the pressure of ourselves to allow the process to happen more fluidly, but the unexpected can reveal beautiful results.  You know what else?  Everyone makes mistakes.  Every single person on earth.  It is how we rise to the occasion that defines us and the work that we make as creative people.

I think I'll save my broken needle...I want it to serve as a reminder to just let go and let the process to happen and be 100% OK with it.

I'll leave you with this quote:

"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep."
-Scott Adams
