Free Crochet Pattern...Squishy Newborn Hats!

These sweet hats are fun and easy to make for a new baby.  Crocheted with soft modern colors and finished off with a cute little applique, they make a thoughtful gift for a new arrival and are a great charity project too!

Instructions for Hat:

Note: stitches are worked in the spaces. Click here for a helpful tutorial. Foundation: Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring.

Round 2: Ch 3, *1 dc in the first space, 2 dc in the next space, rpt from * to end of round. Close round with a sl st
Round 3: Repeat round 2
Round 4: Ch 3 (counts as a dc). Skip the first space and work a dc in each space around. Close round with a sl st.
Repeat round 4 until hat measures 6 inches from beginning. Fasten off.

Note: I made mine in two different striping patterns, you can make your any way you like, but here's how I did mine, in case you'd like to do the same:

Hat on the left: beginning chain and rows 1-4 worked in pink, remaining rows worked in alternating rounds of blue and white.
Hat on the right: Beginning chain and rounds 1-4 worked in pink, then work white until second to last round, then work blue for the last round.

Finishing & Assembly:

You can add a fun applique to your hats if you like:

To finish up your hats, sew appliques to hats and weave in any ends that remain.

    1. I love this yarn, it was pleasant to work with, I've been looking for the aqua, I want to make one in that shade too! :)

  2. I'm about to make some of these soon, as they are lovely. I was looking at buying the same yarn and when looking I noticed they don't have one called Aqua in that brand. I even double checked on Lion Brand website, the closest colour I could see would be sea sprite but it doesn't look like the same colour you used. Shame I can't get that colour, hopefully sea sprite will still look good. Any way I just wanted to let you know, do you think you used another yarn for that colour? Thanks again for the great pattern, I can't wait to start!
