Interview With Sharon Zientara, Author of “It Girl Crochet!”

Good morning lovelies! I have a very special guest on Fiber Flux today, Sharon Zientara, author of “It Girl Crochet” from Interweave Press. Sharon has graciously agreed to stop by and tell us about her new book and share a little about herself too.

Welcome Sharon, thank you so much for stopping by today!  First things first, how did you get started with crochet?

Sharon: I learned to crochet when I was in grade school, but I really fell in love with knitting. I was a knitter for more than twenty years, and also worked on an alpaca farm, shearing in exchange for yarn! I moved to Colorado to do so, and began an internship at Interweave. The first job opening in the editorial department was at Interweave Crochet. I knew I wasn’t nearly well-versed enough in crochet so I bought Edie Eckman’s Crochet Answer Book and used my mother’s old aluminum Boye hooks and started feverishly hooking up swatches. While it was complete coincidence, I’m so grateful for the circumstance.

What design did you enjoy creating the most when writing this book?

Sharon: Well, my only personal design is the cowl and while I had fun with it, I have to say that Brenda K. B. Anderson’s stockings are the most amazing piece of architecture and for me, a really exciting project in the book. Brenda has the most amazing mind for construction. The pineapple motif is what actually forms to the calf. It blew my mind. And the yarn is one of my favorites, too.

Here are the socks Sharon is talking about…they are incredible!

What influences and inspires your crocheted designs?

Sharon: My designs and the designs I included here are really influenced by crochet garments and accessories I see in boutiques. I felt as though there weren’t patterns out there that looked like what I saw in shops. I also really love to knit and I’m often curious about how I can turn a knit pattern or technique into crochet. There are a lot of knitted things that are just more fun to crochet and to figure out how to do those things in a way that looks cool and translates well is a fun challenge for me.

What is on your hook at the moment?

Sharon: I run a yarn shop and a customer made a really beautiful version of the Shawl Vigne from the book. I had to make my own right away. Also, I have two new nephews on the way and baby things are one of my favorite things to crochet. I have baby booties on the brain!
