The Foundation Treble Crochet Stitch (or “ftr” for short, although I’ve seen some other abbreviations for it too) is a very handy skill to have in your crochet tool box. It eliminates the need for a starting chain…you work both chains and treble crochet stitches as you go!
Watch the full video tutorial on how to work the foundation treble crochet stitch (ftr):
- Step 1: Start with a slip knot on your hook.
- Step 2: Chain 5
- Step 3: Wrap yarn around hook two times.
- Step 4: Wrap yarn around hook and bring up a loop (4 loops on the hook)
- Step 5: Wrap yarn around hook and bring through first loop on the hook (4 loops on the hook)
- Step 6: Wrap yarn around hook and bring through the next two loops on the hook (3 loops on the hook)
- Step 7: Wrap yarn around the hook. Bring it through the next two loops on the hook (2 loops on the hook)
- Step 8: Wrap yarn around the hook. Bring it through last two loops on the hook (1 loops left on the hook)
*This completes the first ftr. Step 9 begins the second ftr on your row.
- Step 9: Wrap yarn around hook twice.
- Step 10: At the bottom of the last stitch worked, turn work slightly to the side and locate the “v” at the bottom. Insert hook into the “v”
- Step 11: Wrap yarn around hook and bring up a loop ( 4 loops on the hook)
- Step 12: Wrap Yarn around hook and bring it through the first loop on the hook (4 loops on the hook)
- Step 13: Wrap yarn around hook and bring it through next two loops on the hook (3 loops on the hook)
- Step 14: Wrap yarn around hook and bring it through next two loops on the hook (2 loops on the hook)
- Step 15 (last step): Wrap yarn around hook and bring it through last two loops on the hook (one loop will be left on the hook. This completes the second treble crochet stitch. Repeat steps 9-15 for each ftr you need on your row.
