2017 Fiber Flux Fall CAL! Week 1: Intro & Supplies

Welcome to the 2017 Fiber Flux Fall Crochet Along…hooray! Today marks week one of the CAL and we’ll be learning about the beautiful project we’ll be making…the Forest Splendor Shawl!  This shawl is a lovely and lacy shawl that is easy to work up and lots of fun to wear!  We will be going over a few things to begin:

  • Introduction to the project
  • Supplies
  • Sizing
  • Schedule of the CAL
  • Where to connect with other makers

For this CAL (crochet along) we’re going to switch gears a bit and make a shawl!  The past few CALs we’ve made blankets, so I thought it might be fun to shake things up a bit…I think many of you will agree, as the shawl has been a highly requested item in my last weekly update comments.  The CAL will be divided over the next few weeks, concluding with a fun showcase of blankets in our maker gallery! Scroll down for the schedule with actual dates and what we’ll be doing on each day/week.

*This is a self-paced project, so definitely go at the speed you feel most comfortable. The instructional videos and posts will be up forever and you will always be able to go back and watch again and again!

Here is a quick video introduction to the CAL and more information about supplies too:

First things first…the supplies!

Materials Needed:

  • 6.0 mm “J” crochet hook
  • Size 4 medium weight yarn of your choice, approximately 800-850 yards (I’ll be using 1 ball of Super Saver in “Real Teal” 364 yards, 1 ball of Super Saver in “Gray Heather” 236 yards, and Red Heart Soft in “Guacamole” 256 yards. NOTE: Each ball of the Red Heart Super Saver comes in different yardages depending on whether you get solids, ombres, prints, etc.   Please note the Super Saver Prints, Flecks, Stripes, and Multis have a smaller yardage per ball, and the solids are a bit larger.
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape Measure or Ruler (optional)

The finished shawl (if you make the exact one I’ll be making in the pattern and video is approximately 18 inches wide and 80 inches long.  The shawl width can be adjusted using the starting chain multiples (more about that in week 2 of the CAL) and the length can be adjusted by simply working more or less rows of the pattern.  That way you can get a truly customized shawl!

*Note: if you want to make your shawl larger, more yarn might be needed.
