Fiona Crochet Button Scarf

The Fiona Crochet Button Scarf is a lovely piece for both fall and winter and is crocheted lengthwise in a slightly modified granny stripe. Two buttons join it together to create a long loop like an infinity scarf, or wear it unbuttoned for a traditional scarf. Versatile and pretty, lofty and warm! No need to crochet button holes either, just use the decorative holes from the scarf.

  1. So beautiful! And a relatively simply pattern that even a newbie like me can give this a try!

  2. Making this tonight and its so easy to work but I am making the longer version and ran out of yarn! One skein wasn't enough, I still have a row and a quarter to finish. Hoping I can finish this one and get one short scarf out of one more skein…guess we'll see!

  3. Perhaps I am wrong but in Row 2 when you say to *2 dc in the next space, ch 1, rpt from * I had to DC2 in next space,ch 1 skip 2 spaces rpt to get the same look you have. With your pattern I was adding stitches each row and getting a bumpy growing scarf. What am I missing here?

    1. It sounds to me like it may be increasing because you are skipping two spaces? In the foundation row, you skip chains, but in the next row, each space has 2 dc in it (the ch 1 space from the previous row)

Does that help? Please let me know if you have any other questions about it… 🙂

    2. Make sure you are working the SPACES and not the STITCHES. If you work the st you will increase your scarf like you said. If you are working the spaces then it will come out right.

    3. After you finish the first row, you should have 2 Double Crochets, 1 chain space, then 2 Double Crochets, 1 chain space, etc etc, all the way across the row. the next row, you do the 2 Double Crochets in the 1 Chain Space of row 1, then, do your 1 Chain Space, then 2 double crochets in the 1 chain space of row 1. do this all the way across the row. Repeat for each row. Your double crochets are being done in the 1 chain space of the previous row. Hope this helps.

  4. Thanks so much! Found your patterns on Ravelry, and really liked the duel purpose of the Fiona~ (Scarf & cowl) Got it done in two sittings (while distraced by prime time tv, no less!) and eneded up with it being two colors since I ran out of the grey I had on hand and added cream to finish it off, but I'm really happy with it being two tone!! Now to find some buttons!

  5. Thank you Anonymous for pointing out to work in the SPACES. Crochet and I are new friends and I too, was confused. Glad I at least thought of coming back to the blog. Now I'm on the third row and all is well! 🙂 My daughter is going to LOVE this scarf for Christmas.

  6. Dear Jennifer,
thanks for sharing this pattern. I started mine two hours ago and I'm finishing it while reading blogs, organizing my iTunes, surfing the web 🙂 and listening to lounge music… just a great night!
Thank you for the lovely photo's too, they are what got me intrigued and got me started!
    Happy weekend,

  7. I might be doing something wrong, I am pretty new to crochet. I made the shorter version and I chained 124, my scarf is 5 inches wide but it is 59 inches long and 1 ball of yarn wasn't enough. I am using the exact yarn, and a Boye crochet hook. I even double checked my chain stitches. Hopefully I can figure it out, hoping to give some as Christmas gifts.

Thanks for sharing, the scarf is beautiful.

    1. Hi Kate! Not sure what happened…does each space have just 2 dc in it? Also, at the end of each row, does the turning chain space (the last space at the end of the row) have only one dc in it? If it has two, it will grow longer…let me know if that helps?

  8. Love it! It was a SUPER quick project! Found it on pinterest A friend gave me a box of yarn and I wanted to make a little something from some of the yarn she gave me. This was the perfect project. Thanks!

  9. Thanks for the pattern! I combined a skein of Lions Homespun gray and purple, crocheted it with a S hook starting with a 62 chain. Turned out great!

  10. I just finished one last night, using Loops and Threads Charisma yarn (LOVE this yarn) and a K hook. It's gorgeous. Mine was 45 inches long, 3.5 inches wide. I finished it off with a sc, ch-3, sc edge all around, got it up to about 4.5 inches wide. Only took 3 hours from start to finish! I'm planning to make several more to give as gifts.

  11. I just finished this and LOVE IT! I had so much fun making it and it was fast too! I had to shorted the chain by six inches though because the first time I made it I was just a foot or so short on yarn, I must be slightly more loose than you. The second time with the six chains off I had about three feet to spare.

  12. This was my second crochet project and I loved it!!! I finished in less than 3hrs (would of been even quicker If I hadn't made a few mistakes that required ripping out a row a couple of times). I made this in the Wool-ease raspberry and it is pretty. I will be making more for sure. Thank you so much for such a wonderful, easy to follow pattern.

  13. I am really new to crocheting. Can someone tell me what DC means? I think I understand the difference between spaces and stitches. Thanks.

  14. DC means double crochet. Yarn over, insert hook into work where indicated, draw up a loop ( you should have three loops on hook now), yarn over, draw through two of the loops, yarn over and draw througn all remaining loops. Google double crochet for dummies….that's what I do when I have to make a stitch that I am not familiar with. Also, youtube has some good tutorials. Good luck!

  15. I'm doing the shorter version with one skein of yarn and I also ran out with about one and a quarter rows left to go. I'm new to crocheting but I checked all my stitches and I'm doing everything just like the pattern says. I'm using an M/9mm hook (Susan Bates brand) and Lion Brand super bulky yarn. Could anyone tell me if I might be doing something wrong?

    1. Are you using Lion's Wool Ease Thick and Quick or Lion's Hometown USA? Both are super bulky…the reason I'm asking is because I ran into a similar problem with a different project, the Hometown has less yardage than the Wool Ease. I didn't realized it until I was almost finished. Both yarns are considered a similar weight though.

  16. I added to this pattern a bit when making mine- I added 30 ch to make it longer and added tassels and didn't use buttons. I used three colors and because of my pattern I put the colors in I wound up with seven rows. I love how it turned out! I am making the 45 inch version with buttons with my remaining blue yarn ASAP! Wonderful, easy & fast pattern! Thank you so much for sharing!!!
If you want to see how mine turned out, I posted it here on my blog –> http://chasingbluefeathers.blogspot.com/2012/12/chunky-warm-checkered-scarf.html

  17. I love this one. I made it this afternoon for a co-workers birthday. It turned out great. I know she will love it. It worked up so fast. I almost didn't realize I was finished!!!

  18. I am a newcomer to crochet…this scarf is my first project. I intended to make the 45-inch scarf so chained 124, using a size 9 hook and the Thick and Quick yarn. The length of the chain itself was quite a bit longer than 45 inches. (Am I making the chains too loose?) Regardless I continued with the project and was on the last row when I ran out of yarn. My scarf also seemed to be wider at the last row than on the first row. Any help would be appreciated.

    1. The chains might be loose, but I generally make mine a bit loose anyway so the sides will be nice and stretchy. If they are too tight it would make the scarf draw up on one side.

If the scarf became wider, it could mean that there was an increase(s) somewhere that would account for it growing wider and subsequently running out of yarn because it became a larger finished piece. I really hope that helps!

  19. I love the look of this scarf and I'm sure that this will be a must for 2013! Thank you for sharing the pattern.

    1. You could try…I will sometimes make a test swatch to see how it will look and feel. That helps me to visualize it before I commit to the entire project with that yarn.

  20. Thanks so much for this awesome and easy pattern! Realized that i didnt have right size hook but even in a smaller pattern, a few extra rows and a couple more buttons- it still looks fabulous! Must make another one with the proper hook in another lovely colour! Thanks again 🙂
Saw more patterns too- can't wait to try them out!

  21. What exactly do you mean by space in row 1? I've triode several different ways but I am ending up with inconsistent results. Also when I chain 3 at the end to turn I'm ending up with an almost scalloped edge. Obviously I'm not finding "space" 1

    1. Sure! I was wondering if you are working into the chain spaces (the "holes") or the loops (the actual stitches)? That might be affecting the results…in this pattern, everything is worked in the spaces versus the loops. This could be affecting the width too because working in the loops/stitches would cause a possible increase that make for an inconsistent edge. Let me know if that helps!

  22. Your directions are plain and easy to read. Very pretty patterns. May I add for the newcomers to crochet, always. always check your count or anything else every row. It pays to look it over for any mistake. Happy hooking!

    1. Thank you for your very kind comment and great advice about checking your count, so glad you shared that! 🙂

  23. I'm new to crochet-ing. At my local store they have size N 10mm hooks or size M 9mm hooks. I'm not sure which one I should be using.

    1. Yes! Definitely get the 9mm hook, the 10 mm would be too big. It's weird isn't it? Sometimes the 9mm is called an "N" sometimes an "M" and even "M/N"

Hope that helps and happy crocheting to you!

    2. Thanks! The 9mm size was definitely the way to go. I finished this today & it looks great 🙂
I would have run out of yarn if I'd used the larger hook.

  24. I have made a few of these, and I love them! I was wondering if you would be willing to grant me permission to sell these? I would not be selling them to profit myself, but all profit would be donated to Prayers for Paige Gabriella (check it out on Facebook). Paige is a three year old girl who goes to my church that was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Several of her family's friends are raising money to help offset their bills. Thank you.

  25. How do you attach the buttons? I know how to sew them on, but what do you do w/the ends of the yarn? I've tried weaving them in, but the yarn is so thick that the ends don't want to stay in….

Thank you for the pattern! I get compliments on it every time I wear it 🙂

    1. You could always make the ends extra long and weave them in, or just snip them, that's what I do, perhaps that is not the neatest way to do it, but it's not very noticeable to me. 🙂

  26. Hi Can i have the permission to sell the the finished product . There is a fundraising event in my son's preschool where i am going to sell
    Thank you

    1. Just try highlighting needed text and pasting it to a Word document, that way you can print just what you'll need and even save the pattern for later.

  27. Just made this last night…used an N hook and 1 skein Vanna's Colors by Lion – Bulky- in Topaz (101yds) and it worked up perfectly and very quick! I've also made the garden wrap already, and can't wait to do the pavement scarf too! Love your patterns!! Thank you!!

  28. Hmm…this is an older post I see. However, I was hoping someone could help me. This is the first scarf/cowl pattern I have come across that is exactly like what I want to do for Christmas gifts. I am usually a knitter so the transition to crochet (trying to learn in a day) is frustrating lol. How many chains do you start with?

  29. Aha, Okay I can now formulate my questions better. I assume you start with 124 chains and then you do just one foundation row. (Mine looks a little askew, so I was wondering if I was doing something wrong). The foundation row, is that started with three extra chains to start the dc? Then you continue on to the regular rows as listed. Going through every chain instead of every 4th? Is this correct? Thank you so much for your help!

    1. Hi Rachel! Yes the foundation row is in the fourth chain from the hook, and each stitch is worked in the spaces (as opposed to the stitches), is that what you mean? Let me know if that helped 🙂

  30. I'm just starting to learn how to read patterns. This pattern is soo easy!! I love it!! I just got finished making my scarf tonight") I chained 154 but still seems a lil short… Is it supposed to be wrapped around tightly?

    1. Awesome! Could it be a bit short because of tension? When I first learned to crochet, I worked much tighter than I do now…also did you use the same yarn? That could make a difference too.

  31. I whipped this up last night for my daughter….. it's gorgeous. Thank you got the pattern. Now I need to make one for myself.

    1. Hi Justin042602!

I used the Solid color Wool Ease Thick and quick which has a yardage of 106 yards (the Heathers, Twists, and Tweeds have the same yardage too). The Prints (Sequioa, Mesquite and Granite) are only 87 yards and the Metallics are only 92 yards. Definitely be sure to take this into consideration when choosing your yarn…if you want a ball with a smaller yardage than the solids, you'll definitely need to get two.

That was a really great point your brought up, I will definitely add this to the materials section of this page.

      Thanks again!

  32. Thanks for sharing! I have spent far more time looking for a pattern than I will spend making this!! Heading to the yarn shop Monday!!I really like the Susan Bates hooks–can't recall If sizing is the same. I guess 9mm should be 9mm though, so I'll get one. Thanks again, and recipients who get this for Christmas will thank you too!!
Mel Hayes–didn't know what profile to choose-LOL!

  33. Right now I'm bedridden due to an accident and learned a friend of mine has some trouble and needed a hug. So, I wanted something easy, that could be made and send fast. Found your blog last monday, convinced my sister to visit the yarn shop that day after… now I've got a friend with the same problems, but wearing a lovely scarf she calls 'the crocheted emergency hug'
So thanks for sharing a lovely pattern, that becomes an equaly lovely (and fast!) way to send a hug to somebody you love.
    Izzy

  34. This is a beautiful scarf!! I'm just a beginner and Your instructions made it simple for me to follow! Thank you!!

  35. I'm just starting out and your blog is so helpful! I think I'm going to give this one a whirl and then try the scarf with the curlicues. Thanks!

  36. Hi,
How did you get it to lay that way in the pictures? I can't for the life of me get it to look like that when I put it on. Did you wrap it more than twice? Thanks!

    1. Hi there! Try giving it a twist before buttoning the scarf, that may help it lay a bit differently…hope that helps!

  37. I absolutely love this pattern and I have made two already. What do you do when the buttons holes are too small for you tapestry needle?

    1. When that happens I switch to an embroidery needle (the kind you use for cross stitch) If the yarn is too thick, try pulling apart the plies to make it a bit narrower. 🙂

  38. Just made this in a couple hours. Nice pattern, will be making more for gifts and trying another pattern as well. Thanks.

  39. Hi Jennifer. I love this pattern made 2 so far and making another tonight. In your finished project picture how did you get the scarf to wrap like that. Is there a video or can you give me step by step directions. thank you!!!

    1. Thanks for your question! I just wrapped it twice around and then buttoned it. For some reason if you wrap it first then button it, it lays better…hope that helps!

    1. I know it is odd, but the 9 mm hook is sometimes called an "M" and sometimes an "N" either way, just be sure it is a 9 mm hook…that is the size you need.

    1. Thank you! I believe I used a 1 inch button, but try to pass it through the holes first…too big and it won't fit, too small and it won't stay in place and fall through. 🙂

  40. Love your patterns – this particular one is one of the easiest I have ever done that kept the sides even & has such a lovely design. (Am an experienced crocheter.). Thanks for the great instructions!

  41. I watched the tutorial hoping to see exactly where to sew on the buttons. Can you give detail on where to stitch the buttons?
    Thank you

    1. Yes! The fourth image in this post gives a good idea…I just sewed them side by side at one end of the scarf, then use the decorative holes as button holes. It is helpful to lay them on the scarf before sewing to see exactly where you want them to go. Hope that helps!

  42. Not sure if this went through but as a knitter I must say this was my 1st crochet project and I loved how easy it was to follow along. I just finished this for my daughter's 25th birthday so I'm pretty excited! I'm sure I dropped/added a few stitches here and there but you really can't tell! You've got a new fan here for sure!

  43. Hi I was hoping to try and make this scarf for my daughter but she is sensitive to wool and was wondering if you could recommend a different yarn that would still work with the pattern…

    1. Hi there…great question! Try Lion Brand's Hometown USA…it is a similar weight, super soft and comes in lots of pretty colors. It is 100% acrylic too. Hope that helps! 🙂

    1. I found a pack of 3 hooks at Walmart that included the "N" hook. It's not exactly 9mm, but works great.

    2. Working on my first scarf. It's taking me some time since I've never crochet'd before, but I'm enjoying this scarf. Can you post how to attach the button though?

  44. Have made so many gifts with this pattern in both sizes, with and without buttons. I buy two skeins and make it a couple of rows wider – everyone loves them. Love working with this yarn and even made the throw featured on Lionbrand but had to use a larger hook to get the correct gauge. Used different colors than suggested and it's very warm and cozy.

  45. I just made this tonight i did something wrong because i ran out of yarn and still had one row to go but it come out good. it took me 2 hours to do it! i love watching your videos and making things last week i made a blanket for my best friends baby shower. can't wait to make more!!

  46. Are you sure about the 124 chains making a 45" scarf? I used the same yarn and hook and 124 chains was 62" long, even with me making the chains as tight as the 9mm hook would allow. I ran out of yarn about half way through my last row which prompted me to measure my scarf. It was 72" due to the weight of it. I didn't actually measure the 124 chains until I ripped out the whole scarf and started over. I then did some calculating. If there is a 30 chain difference between the 45" (124 chains) and 60 " (154 chains) scarves then that would be 10 chains per 5 inches. That would mean only 90 chains would be needed for a 45" scarf. I am so confused. Did you actually measure your chain after making the 124 chains and get 45"? I don't want to get hung up on the actual length here, I would just like it to fit like the picture where it is looped around the neck twice and buttoned. It's just when you make a point of saying that 124 chains makes a 45" scarf, I am wondering what I am doing differently to make mine so much longer than 45" with the same amount of chains. Please help!

  47. Sorry if this is a repeat question but someone requested this scarf made in a worsted weight yarn instead of chunky. How much yarn do you think I would need to make the 45 inch one?

  48. Hello! This is a beautiful piece! Thank you for sharing! I just wanted to make sure I am understanding your disclaimer….the pattern is not allowed to be sold or the finished product is not allowed to be sold? Thanks in advance!

  49. I really like this pattern and how easy and fast it was to crochet. I was able to follow your directions, but I wish you'd added directions on how to sew on the buttons! But I was able to make it work. I watched your video too and would like to know where you got that gorgeous wooden multi-colored hook? It's beautiful!

  50. I found this video on a page with a picture of a shawl and I'm wondering if they are the same stitch. The shawl was blue and used a thinner yarn I think.

  51. I found this pattern on facebook the other day and I went out today to buy 2 balls of this awesome yarn in two different colors, one for each scarf. When I read the pattern it specifically stated that one ball each for the shorter scarf! Well I'm short by half a scarf! I ran out of yarn litter a Lynn half way through! I re-read the entire pattern and web page to see if I missed something, but nope it says one ball for the smaller one! It wouldn't be such a problem but I live an hour away from JoAn's and won't be able to get more tar till next week. I guess I should have went with my gut and bought 2 of each color and then even if I had a ball of each left over i could have always make more scarves! Oh well live and learn…always buy more yarn than it says!

  52. Jennifer, you are by far the easiest to learn from. Between the color of the yarn making it easy to see and the good view and great instruction!!! I am a crochet Queen!!!!!!

  53. Jennifer, I have crocheted in the past although it has been years/decades.
I want to thank you so much for this pattern.
Feeling so grateful I also found the instruction video this afternoon. You are so correct that this is as easy pattern and so quick.
I was able to crochet this scarf in about 1 hour. Thank you

  54. Thank you so much for the written pattern! I got OBSESSED with how easy to make this scarf is that I kept going and going…LOL I had to stop myself. It turned beautiful! Thanks again! (I used a big pin instead of buttons)
