The V stitch is such a fun and easy thing to crochet, I use it often. I received a few questions about working the V stitch, so I figured a tutorial was in order. If you're more of a visual person (I totally am too), this will be most helpful. To demonstrate the V stitch, we'll work the first few rows of the Pavement Infinity Scarf. Be sure to check at the bottom of this post for more patterns using the V stitch too.

To begin, I used the same yarn and hook as the Pavement Infinity Scarf. However, you can use any yarn you like to practice yours.

Begin by making a slip knot,

Then chain 19,

In the 4th chain from the hook, work one double crochet, chain 1, then one double crochet all in that same chain, this will make the first "V"

Now skip two chains, and in that next chain, do the same thing, dc, ch 1, dc all in that same chain. Now we have two Vs.

Keep repeating this sequence until you reach the end. You have now completed the foundation row.

Now you'll want to turn and chain 3.

On to row 1...now, see where my hook is pointing? Right in the middle of that V? This is where we will put our first V of row 1.

So in that first V, work dc, ch 1, dc, all in that same space. (Note: be sure you are working in the spaces and not the stitches (loops). For a more detailed explanation, click here)

Do the same thing in the next V,

And continue until you reach the last V,

Before you go on on to the next row, work one double crochet in the turning chain space from the previous row. (Note: be sure not to make a V in this space, just one dc, if you were to make a V, you would be increasing every row and ultimately end up with a triangle-like shape)

Now we're ready for the next row...

So, turn and chain 3 again,

and now work the row as before...keep going until your piece is exactly the length you'd like it to be. Be sure to check below for more V-stitch patterns!

Here are some patterns that use the V stitch, there are lighter, worsted weight and bulkier items too:

Thank you! Just saw your cactus pattern...so cute!

DeleteHello, I'm completely in love with your Pinot noir scarf but can''to seem to get the pattern to work. I'm not to sure what I'm doing wrong as I completely understand the v stitch, is there something I am missing? Is there a more detailed instruction pattern?
