Berry Season Blanket, Free Crochet Pattern + Video

This sweet blanket celebrates berries in season. It is crocheted in rounds with pretty shades of strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry in an easy to follow granny square pattern. Make a tiny one for a dolly, a small one for a special baby, a medium one for a throw. Or, try making a very large one for a lovely full size afghan or bed covering. The number of rounds will determine the size.

  • 1 Skein Red Heart Super Saver, Lavender (Color E)

Other Materials:

Instructions:

This blanket is a classic granny square with a simple color pattern. Here is a photo tutorial to guide that may help you when making your granny square:

Color sequence as shown (this is one full repeat of the color pattern, repeat this as many times as you like for preferred sizing):

  • 3 Rounds Color A
  • 1 Round Color B
  • 3 Rounds Color C
  • 1 Round Color B
  • 3 Rounds Color D
  • 1 Round Color B
  • 3 Rounds Color E
  • 1 Round Color B

Chain 4, join into a ring with a slip stitch.

Round 1: Chain 4, work (3 dc into center of ring, chain 1) 3 times, then 2 dc into center of ring. Join to close with a slip stitch.

Round 2: To work the corner of round 2, first chain 4, then 2 dc in same space, then chain 1, then 3 dc in the same space…first corner done!

Then chain 1, then work the next corner by working 3 dc in next space, chain 1, then 3 dc in same space, chain 1, repeat two more times to complete the round.

Round 3: Work the corner in the same manner as the previous round: chain 4, 2 dc in same space, chain 1, 3 dc in same space, chain 1. To work the sides, simply work 3 dc in the next space then chain 1…repeat until you reach a corner again.

Keep working in this manner, with two clusters in the corners and one cluster on the sides until you finish the round. Just be sure there is a ch 1 in between each grouping of 3 dc as you work each round. That is what gives you those pretty spaces in between each cluster and keeps it nice and flat.

Repeat round 3 as many times as you want to achieve the desired size.

A note about making multicolored rounds:
To begin a new round in the same color, simply slip stitch until you reach a ch1 at the corner and keep going.
To begin a new round in a new/different color, cut yarn, leaving a tail, and fasten it with a slip stitch. Join the new yarn at one of the corners as shown and tie securely.

Finishing:
Weave in any ends.

  1. Thank you! I made sure to choose yarn that would be hardworking and withstand lots of washings too! 🙂

  2. Years ago I made a large one of these with craft yarn, it is really heavy so glad to get this one that I can make with a lighter yarn. Thanks.

    1. Beautiful, love the colors. I must say the pattern is not unique. I made it 30 years ago in green shades, and it is still being used. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to make one again. in purples for my new great grand daughter.

  3. Thanks for your kind comments! I had a lot of fun choosing the colors…it has a cheerful addition to our house! 🙂

  4. Hello. I'm new to crocheting and was hoping to make a throw for myself. This pattern is very easy and the colors are beautiful. However,I've used Red Heart Super Saver Yarn before and found it very scratchy and harsh. Would it turn out well if i used another type of yarn? And if so, which yarn do you recommend?

  5. Is this dangerous to download to my computer? I love it and want the pattern. I don't know if I should download!

    1. You could also click the green "print friendly" button at the bottom of the post and save it as a PDF, email it to yourself, or print it right from there too. 🙂

    1. Each row measured about an inch on the one I made, so each round would be double that..approximately 2 inches. However I would try working up a swatch to see if each one of your rounds is the same measurement. A queen bed measures about 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, so you could start there, and keep going depending on how long you'd like for it to hang down.

      Hope that helps! 🙂

  6. How in the world do you print this pattern? I get all kinds of picture [ADS} on the side. How do I get rid of that so I can get the pattern????? It prints right over the ads and and I can't read them!!!!!!!!

    1. At the bottom of the post there is a green "print friendly" button. Click on that and from there you can just print text if you like. That should help.

  7. I made this 'giant' granny square back in the early 90's. Except I made it with leftover yarn scraps. It was one of my daughter's favorite blankets. In fact I just taught her how to make her own. Great minds think alike! I wonder how many of us have created what I call "the never ending granny square blanket". It was quite the blanket! Unfortunately, we lost our home to fire. I guess it's time I made another. It's been awhile since I've been able to bring myself to start crocheting all over. When you have to buy everything all over again it gets costly. Which is why I'm always looking for free patterns. Thanks for sharing. If any of your followers have any good links or patterns to share I'd appreciate it!

  8. I love the colours! What was the finished size? I want to make this pattern and I am trying to figure out how much yarn I will need for a certain blanket size.

  9. Hey Jennifer! I've just learned to crochet fully by watching your videos. One thing I've learned about myself is that my brain is still not translating written patterns. So, if you take requests… Would you do this Berry Season blanket as a you tube video? Maybe a pumpkin patch colored one… IDK. I already made the baby one with the hometown USA yarn.

    1. I have this same problem and found the following on the net: Each crochet stitch has a bit of a lean to it. When you crochet a square in rounds always going in the same direction, the lean adds up and you get a skewed square. The solution is to turn the work occasionally and work in the opposite direction. This way you have a mix of wrong side and right side rounds, and you wont have them all leaning the same way and causing the blanket to be skewed.

From previous discussions, some people never get the skew even tho they do not turn, but some of us have to turn in order to have an unskewed square.

  10. This video has taught me how to crochet, thank you, im now attempting to make the entire blanket as my first project. Very easy to follow steps amd very clear instructions. .

Thanks so much for the clear instructions in your video tutorial. Its been many years since I last crochet and your instructions has been much helpful. Thanks again

  12. Hi Jennifer, I have started to make a large granny square baby blanket using two other different patterns, and after getting into the outer rows, maybe 8 or 10, my blanket square starts to get an askew or twist look at the center. Yours does not appear to do that. I understand the directions written & video. However, there was one thing in your video and also in your blog directions that are unclear. When you get to the end of the second row and you are NOT changing to another color of yarn, you are at a point in the crocheting where you join with a sl st to the top of the chain 4. Since you are not changing colors, and you are NOT in the center of the corner, what do you do at that point and at the point of each of the next rows when you are not changing yarn colors? The rest of the instructions are so clear and easy to follow and I am anxious to try this out one more time. Thank you so much for your reply. Maybe even an additional video for how you proceed after the joining of the rows past the second row without color changes would be helpful to many people. Have a blessed day.

  13. Hi again,
Oops, I didn't read past the directions to see your note at the end of the pattern: "A note about making multicolored rounds:
To begin a new round in the same color, simply slip stitch until you reach a ch1 at the corner and keep going." Sorry about that. You don't need to post the other comment if you don't want to. Thanks! It is all quite clear now. 🙂

  14. This is exactly what I've been looking for! It's for my 3 year old granddaughter as a lap rug. I'm just a beginner so thanks for the video. I'm starting tonight and I'm rather nervous, I hope I can do it without getting too frustrated lol.

  15. I began making this blanket today. I'm struggling with it curling up on me. Why would that be? I'm a beginner so I'm learning. Thank you
