Fun With Self-Striping Granny Squares

I’m working on a project (more about that soon).  I just had to share these granny squares!  I normally use solid colored yarn and either make monochromatic squares or alternate colors and make stripes, but I got my hands on this pretty self-striping sock yarn and wanted to experiment…

I found this yarn at the fabric store’s clearance section…under a dollar a ball!  I love a great find, don’t you?

I made each one of these squares without switching colors…just like making a monochromatic square.  It was so thrilling to watch each one change each colors as each square grew.  Each one is totally different and equally pretty, I think.  Have fun creating this weekend!

  1. Love the color! Would you share the type of yarn/color? Please? I really need to find some of it, I like it so much. And I would really like to try a granny square blanket with this color.

    1. A granny square blanket with this yarn would be really fun! The yarn shown is from the "Sensations" line. I got it a JoAnn Fabrics…I think it is their brand. The type of yarn is called "Truly Pattern" and the description on the label says it is super fine wool blend yarn. The colorway is "1434" I hope that helps…it is a little obscure…sorry about that!

If you can't find this, try Lion brand's "Sock-Ease" This yarn reminds me of that and comes in a rainbow of fun colors. Lion yarn is usually widely available too.

Hope that helps, happy crocheting! 🙂

    2. Just did a search – "truly pattern" has been discontinued… that's why you found it in the discount bin! I'll be off to find something similar.

  2. I luv the colors! I will have to look for some variegated/stripy yarn. It always amazes me how different the granny square can look…my favorite crochet square! Thx for sharing….MO

  3. Hi Jennifer,

I actually use Red Heart Super Saver variegated yarn to make huggy blankies. I wash the blankie before attaching a cute animal to it, it softens up nicely and I love how it makes it own stripes/patterns. Kathy
