Embroidery Floss Bookmarks, Free Crochet Pattern + Video

Embroidery Floss Bookmarks are so easy to make and add some pretty cheer to a favorite book.  Make a few to have on hand when you gift a book to someone, or perhaps stick one to a loved one’s textbook and tuck it into their backpack for a fun surprise!

Check out the video where I walk you through the entire project, step by step!

To make an embroidery floss bookmark, you’ll need:

  • Embroidery Floss (I used regular DMC cotton floss)
  • Paper clips (any size you like)
  • F (3.75 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry Needle (the smaller the better)
  • Scissors
  • Buttons (optional)
  • To attach your paperclip you can add a few stitches with the needle and floss or simply glue it with a hot glue gun or fabric glue.

Start by crocheting the components with the floss and F hook.  See below for pattern for the rose, 5 petal flower and leaf:

Rose:

Ch 12
Row 1: In the 4th chain from the hook, work 2 dc, then work 3 dc in each chain all the way across.  It will begin to curl up immediately, and by the time you get to the end, it will look like a rose.
Fasten off then coil it up.

To stitch it together, start with the outermost tail and tack down the edge with a stitch or two,
then thread the other tail with the tapestry needle and run it through the middle to secure.

You can also add a few around to hold it together a bit more.  I have found that if I don’t put enough stitches in, it tends to be a bit floppy.  However, if you over stitch it, I have found that it flattens out and loses a lot of its dimension.  A couple of well placed stitches are all you need.

To finish it off, tie off the back and weave in the ends.

Leaf:

Foundation: Ch 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Round 1:  In the center of the ring, work (6 dc, 4 sc, 1 tr, 4 sc).  Join with a slip stitch to close leaf and fasten off.

Join with a slip stitch to close leaf and fasten off.

5 Petal Flower:

Ch 5 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Round 1:  Work (3 dc, sl st) into center of ring five times, then join with a slip stitch to close flower and fasten off.

Assembly & Finishing:

After crocheting everything, weave in the ends.  My tapestry needle was a little big for those teeny flowers and leaves, I recommend a smaller one to make it a little easier!

Now that we have all of the parts finished, we can put it all together.  It’s up to you how you’d like to attach the paper clips…you could quickly glue them (hot glue or fabric glue), or a couple of stitches using the floss works nicely too.

Layering things looks nice too, I think my favorite is the rose and leaf…If you used glue, let everything dry completely, then grab a good book.
