Free Crochet Pattern…Tree Frog Hat and Scarf Set

The Tree Frog Hat and scarf set is cute and lofty for your favorite little person.  Because the set is crocheted with a larger hook and super bulky yarn, you can work the whole set up in no time.  Make a few for thoughtful, last minute gifts in bright and fun yarn.  This pattern is also great for charity projects or charity groups because it is super warm for the recipient and easy to make!

Materials:

  • 1 Skein Lion Brand Hometown USA in the Monterey Lime colorway (Color A)
  • 1 Skein Lion Brand Hometown USA in the Fort Worth Blue colorway (Color B)
  • N (9.0 mm) Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry/Yarn Needle

Sizing:

  • Both hat and scarf are completely customizable for just about any size head and neck…instructions will show you how to make it the size you want.

Instructions for Scarf:

Note: For the scarf shown, each color stripe is two rows.

Foundation: Make a chain as long as you’d like your scarf to be.  (I like to make a chain from one hip and around the neck to the other hip.  That makes a nice length for wearing as is or tying together).  In the second chain from the hook, work a sc.  Work a sc in each ch to the end of the row.

Row 1: Ch 1 and turn.  In the first stitch, work a sc.  In the next st and every stitch across row, work a sc.

Repeat row 1 until scarf is as wide as you like, changing colors every two rows.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Instructions for Hat:

Note: Hat is constructed by making a large rectangle, folding it in half and seaming up the sides…no increases or decreases needed!  Pom poms are added later.

*Before beginning the hat, measure the circumference of child’s head.

Foundation (Shown in green yarn/color A): Make a chain half the length of the circumference of child’s head, plus 6 more chains to allow for seam allowance (for seaming it up later).  In the second ch from the hook, work a sc.  Work a sc in each ch across row.

Row 1: (Shown in green yarn/color A): Ch 1 and turn.  Work a sc in each stitch across row.

Row 2: (Change colors before starting this row, this section shown in blue/color B).  Ch 3 and turn, work a dc in first stitch and in each st across row.

Continue working Row 2 in blue/color B until hat is desired height, times two (accounting for height for both front and back)

Here are some standard hat height guidelines, but measure child’s head for best fit, as all heads are different!  I made mine to the height I thought it should be, then double checked it on the child’s head and it was a good fit.

Hat height guidelines:

  • Preemie 4″ – 5.5″
  • Newborn: 5.5″ – 6 “
  • Baby: 7″ – 7.5″
  • Toddler 8 “
  • Child: 8.5″
  • Teen: 9″- 10″x

Switch colors to green/color A yarn and finish rectangle:

Ch 1 and turn.  Work a sc in the first st and in every st across row. Work one more row the same way and fasten off.

Finishing:

Seam up sides of hat with matching yarn and tapestry/yarn.  Make two large pom poms using both colors of yarn leftovers.  Keep tails intact on pom poms and use them to tie them to hat.  Weave in any ends that remain.
