The Estelle Button Cowl is worked up in chunky lace and is a lovely addition to a wintry wardrobe. Double "V" stitches make a pretty, easy, and lacy cowl!
Estelle Button Cowl

Materials:
- 6.5 mm (K) hook
- 1 Skein Red Heart Boutique Treasure, shown in the "Spectrum" colorway (cowl as shown used the entire skein, if making yours longer, please adjust yarn amounts)
- 2 Buttons (Be sure they fit through holes before sewing them on, buttons shown are 1 inch wide)
- Tapestry needle
Sizing:
- 7.5 inches wide
- 32.5 inches long
Instructions:
Ch 23
Row 1: In the fourth ch from the hook, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) . *Skip 3 ch, then (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next ch, repeat from * to last three ch, skip two ch, and in the last ch, work 1 dc. There should be 5 "Vs" across.
Row 2: Chain 3 and turn. In the center of each "V" from the previous row, work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) There should be 5 "Vs" across when you complete the row. Work a dc in the turning chain space.
Repeat row 2 until desired length or until you run out of yarn. From one skein of this yarn I got 39 rows.
Assembly & Finishing:
Using matching yarn, sew buttons to cowl as shown below. Weave in any ends that remain and you're finished!

DeleteI started making this and it is so beautiful! I am only getting 4 v's, however with the 23 chains. I started over 5 times, and still only am getting only 4. At 15 rows, it still looks great.
ReplyDeleteHi I have noticed the same thing, I have realised if you start with a chain of 27 instead of 23 you should have your extra four chains to do the fifth v hope this helps for the future.

DeleteJan. 5, 2015 I love the look of this scarf, but my crochet is so tight I have to do 45 rows to get 32". And even with that it doesn't look as long as yours when I put it on my neck. Help, what I'm I doing wrong?
ReplyDeleteHi there and thanks for your question! If your crochet is tight and are not achieving the desired length, just continue repeating rows until you get the length you are after...hope that helps!

ReplyDeleteGrateful for your simple free pattern for a cowl scarf. My church Prayer Shawl group are making scarves to give to Senior Citizens next winter. Your pattern is basic and quick to make, I am thinking about using a lighter type yarn to make scarves that can be worn during the milder temperatures.
