Yarny Kids Project! Yarn and Bead Ornaments

We’ve been on a Perler bead kick around here and have made all of these fun shapes in a rainbow of colors!  Wanting to display our creations, here is a great way to hang them up.  Be sure to try the glow in the dark beads…so fun for a kid’s room too!  To keep those kiddos busy, here is a link to lots more Yarny Kids Projects to check out together:

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Perler beads
  • Shaped peg boards (sometimes come as a kit along with the beads)
  • An iron
  • Yarn (cotton dishcloth yarn shown here)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Optional: Suction cups with hooks for hanging

Begin by making your shapes using the beads and the peg boards.  You can do a fancy pattern, or a multi-color mix like we did.  Following manufactures instructions and using the included parchment paper, iron the beads to fuse them.  Note: It is extremely important to have the paper in between the plastic beads and the iron so you don’t ruin your iron!  I found that the non-steam setting worked best.

Let cool completely before moving on.

Cut a length of yarn,

Thread through one of the beads to hang.  During the ironing process, the openings to the beads will close up a bit.  The yarn needle will help get the yarn through.  Do this part gently as to not break the joined together beads.

Knot the yarn and swing the knot to the back of the ornament.

Optional step:  I wanted to add a festive tassel to make it extra festive, to make one too, check out this helpful tutorial:

Note: The red tassel shown in the photos here is made the same exact way, but yarn is only wrapped around two fingers to make the tassel smaller.

Finish up the ornament by securing the tassel and trimming the ends.  Super cute!

  1. These are cute. My daughter likes Perler beads, but she usually breaks them apart soon after they're done. lol
