Materials:

  • One Skein Wool Ease Thick and Quick in the “Barley” colorway (Note: This particular yarn varies in yardage for the solids, tweeds, prints, etc.  Cowl shown was made using the Wool Ease Tweeds, which are 106 yards per skein).  Please check your yardage and adjust accordingly.
  • N (9.0 mm) Crochet Hook
  • 3 Buttons (Be sure to pick a button that will comfortably fit through the button hole.  Likewise, because of the chunky yarn, you’ll want to select a button that is large enough to secure the chunky button hole in place.  A button that is too small will more than likely fall out and not hold it in place.  Click here for more tips on selecting buttons…
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors

Sizing:

  • 8 inches wide
  • 32 inch circumference when buttoned

Instructions:

Ch 14

Foundation Row: In the 5th chain from the hook, work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same chain. Skip two chains and work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same chain, skip the next two chains and work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same chain, then one dc in the last chain.

Row 1: Ch 3 and turn.  Work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each of the chain 2 spaces from the previous row (center of each V). Work a dc in the turning chain space.

Repeat row 1 until cowl measures about 32 inches or until you run out of yarn.  Be sure to save a small amount of yarn at the end to sew on the three buttons.

Finishing & Assembly:

Weave in all ends with the tapestry needle.  Sew three buttons along the starting edge (where the foundation row was crocheted)  It will be the end that is straight.  See photo below:

To wear your cowl, use the three decorative lace holes at the other (scalloped edge) as button holes as shown in the photo below.  All finished!

  1. I like this. I'm taking your pattern along with yarn and hook to the cabin this weekend to work on. Luckily, I had some bulky yarn on hand. 🙂 Thanks again for another nice design.

  2. I have to ask, are these terms in American english, I mean in reference to the size? this is the second item I have tried to work up and my items are coming out way smaller that yours, any help is appreciated thank you

  3. Thanks for this pattern, it was easy to make. Just habe to get some buttons. Looks great and will be a nice present for my sister.

  4. I would like to know how to enlarge this pattern by adding one more shell to the foundation row,
I'm having a problem with the width and need another shell to make it work.

Beautiful Cowl and I can't wait to make……Thanks…Joann

  5. I made this last night in about an hour. I used "charcoal" colorway instead of the one you used because my mother prefers greys and blacks. It was easy and beautiful. A lovely last minute add-on to my Christmas gift treasure trove. Thank you for the pattern!

  6. I love this pattern! I've actually been using Hometown USA to save $, and making them four rows longer, but they are gorgeous! It takes about 1 1/2 skeins. I've even sold a couple! Thanks for the pattern! It's made recovering from knee surgery very fruitful!
