Free Crochet Pattern…Hearthside Cowl!

The Hearthside Cowl is a deliciously cozy cowl with an easy and pretty chevron stripe sequence.  The cowl is crocheted flat, then seamed making it even easier.  Makes a great gift and is perfect for yarn leftovers too!

Chain 27

Row 1:
Work a dc in 4th ch from hook, skip a ch, work a dc in each of the next 4 ch, 3 dc in next ch, dc in each of the next 4 ch, skip 2 chains, dc in each of the next 4 ch, 3 dc in next chain, dc in each of the next 4 ch, skip next chain, dc in the last chain.

Row 2:
Ch 3 and turn.
Work a dc in first st, skip the next st, work a dc in each of the next 4 sts, 3 dc in next st, dc in each of the next 4 sts, skip next 2 sts, dc in each of the next 4 sts, 3 dc in next st, dc in each of the next 4 sts, skip next st, dc in the turning chain to finish the row.

Repeat row two until entire piece measures 28 inches from the beginning or until desired length.  Be sure to end on a different color than when you first began, so there is a continuous stripe sequence around the entire cowl.

Weave in any ends that remain and you’re ready to assemble!

Tip: When making striped pieces, it is helpful to crochet in the ends as you go. Click below for a photo/video tutorial to learn how:

Finishing & Assembly:

Match up the edges.  The chevrons will line up kind of like a puzzle.  You can whip stitch the ends together or crochet them together.  I found that I had the most control when I laid everything flat and whip stitched the edges with a matching piece of yarn and a tapestry needle.

  1. I started this and I think it will be pretty, but you might want to check the pattern and your video on Row 2, I believe there is an error. I think, there should be 2 dc at the end.

    1. Hi Karen, thanks for your input! At the end of each row, after the last group of 4 dc, skip the next st, then work a dc into the turning chain. That will finish off the row. I added a bit more detail to the written pattern about the turning chain verbiage as well. Hope that helps!

    2. Thanks for the reply. I guess I will just continue as I am, as it is working. There are 2 dc at beginning (one being the ch 3) and 2 at the end with one being in the turning chain and yes I skipped a space. Forgive me, I guess I altered your pattern. Thanks for sharing your creativity with us.

  2. Hi there

No matter what I do, I keep picking up stitches. My first two rows are always fine but then i end up with more and more stitches every row. Any advice please?

Many thanks for your lovely patterns.
