The Foundation Half Double Crochet Stitch (or fhdc for short as it is shown in patterns) is a very handy skill to have in your crochet tool box. It eliminates the need for a starting chain…you work both chains and half double crochet stitches as you go!
Be sure to scroll down to see the full video tutorial that walks you through step by step too!
- 1: Start with a slip knot on your hook.
- 2: Chain 3
- 3: Wrap yarn around the hook, then insert the hook into the furthest chain from the hook (first chain you made).
- 4: Wrap yarn around hook and bring up a loop (3 loops on the hook)
- 5: Wrap yarn around the hook and bring through the first loop on the hook (3 loops on the hook)
- 6: Wrap yarn around the hook and bring through all three loops on the hook (1 loop left on the hook)
*This completes the first fhdc. Step 7 begins the second fhdc on your row.
- 7: Wrap yarn around hook
- 8: At the bottom last stitch worked, turn work slightly to the side and locate the “v” at the bottom. Insert hook into the “v”
- 9: Wrap yarn around hook and bring up a loop (3 loops on the hook)
- Step 10: Wrap yarn around hook and bring it through the first loop on the hook (3 loops on the hook)
- Step 11: Wrap yarn around hook and bring through all three loops on the hook (1 loop left on the hook)
- Step 12: Repeat steps 7-11 for each fhdc you need on your row.
