French Vanilla Button Cowl, Free Crochet Pattern + Full Video Tutorial


The French Vanilla Button Cowl is an elegant and modern cowl worked in alternating rows of double crochet and puff stitches.  Super soft with fabulous drape, it is secured with a beautiful wood button.

Sizing As Shown:

  • 23 Inches Long
  • 10.5 Inches Tall


Materials:

  • 1 Skein Knit Picks Mighty Stitch, each skein is 208 yards (Colorway Shown: “Oyster”) 
  • J (6.0 mm) Crochet Hook
  • 1 Button
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors

Instructions:

Note: Stitch sequence is a multiple of 2 + 4. To make a puff stitch, wrap yarn around hook and draw up a loop (3 loops on your hook), wrap yarn around hook and draw up another loop (5 loops on your hook), wrap yarn around hook and draw up a loop (7 loops on your hook). Wrap yarn around hook one more time and bring it through all 7 loops on your hook.

Ch 44

Foundation Row: In the fourth ch from the hook, work a (dc, ch 1. *Skip 1 ch and in the next ch, work a (dc, ch 1). Repeat from * until you have two chains left. Skip the second to last ch and in the last ch, work 1 dc.

Row 1: Chain 3 and turn. Work a (puff stitch, ch 1) into each dc from previous row. Work a dc in the top of the turning ch.

Row 2: Chain 3 and turn. Work a (dc, ch 1) in the top stitch of each puff from previous row. Work a dc in the top of the turning ch.

Repeat rows 1 & 2 until cowl measures 23 inches long or until you run out of yarn (be sure to save about 12 inches or so to sew the button on).

  3. I have made this twice using Red Heart Soft yarn and they are both lop sided.I have watched the video multiple times. Thankfully, it's a drapey cowl but I can't think of what I'm doing wrong.

  5. What do you mean by 2 + 4 when increasing the size? I am a beginner and don't know whether this is a technical term.

  7. You get to determine the size of the piece. When you decide how big you'd like it your beginning chain needs to be a multiple of 2, (Even) then do 4 more. Then you can follow the pattern as written. Hope this helps you!
