How To Crochet Into The Back Bump of A Chain, Tutorial + Video

Crochet Into The Back Bump of A Chain

Did you know you can crochet into the back bump of a chain to neaten your project’s edge?  I have had a few requests recently for this technique, so I thought I’d share a video tutorial to demonstrate how to do it.  Thanks for your requests and keep them coming!

It is super easy and makes a nice neat edge…on the right are some single crochet stitches I made into the front of the chain and on the left I made the stitches into the back of the chain:

Notice how the edge has a straighter look and has a little more of a tighter compact look. It’s subtle but it may be just what you need for a project. Try it next time you need to work into a chain to see if you like it!

When you’re learning this skill it may help to use a medium weight smoother strand and it’s recommended hook so you can see the stitch well. Once you learn and become an expert, try using any yarn you like with this technique! In the photos and video, I used some worsted weight yarn and a J (6.0 mm) crochet hook.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Make a chain as long as you like or what your pattern says.
  • Now instead of working your stitch into the front “v” of the chain, turn the chain over to the back.
  • It will look like interlocking rings, like a chain link rope.
  • Work your stitch into the horizontal “bump” of the chain.
  • Repeat across until you get to the end of the chain.
