How To Add A Little Tag To A Hat…A Great Way to Up-Cycle!

I just love the look of those little tags on hats I’ve been seeing…so cute!  This an up-cycling project, so I’ll be using something I already have and giving it a new purpose!  Here is a great article on upcycling…a fun read!

Important note: For those who do not wish to use leather, there are faux substitutes as well…it’s your choice as a maker to use what you wish.

Below is a quickie video tutorial, read on below for more information too:

Of course you can buy ready made one yourself too, here are a couple of Etsy shops that sell them…personalized too!

If you’re into upcycling and want to source small pieces of leather yourself, here are some ideas…check your closet or even the thrift store too!

  • belts
  • purses (strap or main part of bag)
  • shoe straps
  • boots
  • jacket or coat
  • garments (pants, vests, etc)

For this project you’ll need:

  • Small pieces of leather/suede/faux leather/pleather/canvas (see above where to find these materials) As a side note, thinner, less stiff pieces are easier to sew on.
  • Sharp scissors
  • Hat, scarf or any other item you’ll be adding the tag onto
  • Heavy needle and thread/floss or a hot glue gun
  • Thimble (if you’re sewing it on, this will help a whole lot to get the needle through the thick material)

Let’s get started, shall we?

  • Begin by cutting a rectangular piece (sharp scissors are super helpful)  I cut mine into a little rectangle 1 inch wide and 2 inches long.
  • Decide on placement and fold the rectangle over the hat/scarf edge.
  • Sew with the needle and thread or just hot glue it right on.  Note: As mentioned above in the supplies list…a thinner and more flexible piece of leather will be much easier to attach onto your hat/scarf.  Also, if you are hot gluing, apply just a very thin layer of glue instead of the yarn to prevent oozing.
  • Allow to completely dry before wearing.
