2018 Fiber Flux Summer CAL! Land & Sea Cardi, Week 2: The Granny Hexagon

Welcome to week 2 of the 2018 Fiber Flux Summer Crochet Along!  Today marks week two of the CAL and we’ll be jumping right into the Land & Sea Cardi!  This is a fun to stitch up, super easy cardigan sweater that allows the maker to really customize their project.

Today we’ll tackle the granny hexagon, and learn how it all comes together (seaming, etc. will happen next week).  Also wanted to mention a big thanks to those of you who have requested a wearable…so much fun!

Also, a very special thanks to Red Heart for sponsoring this CAL with their amazing yarn!  And congratulations to Sandy B, winner of the Red Heart yarn giveaway last week!

Today we are going to be covering:

  • How to begin
  • The granny hexagon (written steps + full video tutorial)
  • How to size your hexagons
  • How to switch colors
  • Review of the CAL schedule
  • Where to connect with other makers

For this CAL (crochet along) we are making the “Land & Sea Cardi,” a beautiful, yet simple cardigan sweater!  This has been a highly requested item in the Fiber Flux community, so I am so super excited to making this together!  The CAL will be divided over the next few weeks, concluding with a fun showcase of projects in our maker gallery! Scroll down for the schedule with actual dates and what we’ll be doing on each day/week.

*This is a self-paced project, so definitely go at the speed you feel most comfortable. The instructional videos and posts will be up forever and you will always be able to go back and watch again and again!

Here is a full video tutorial for week 2 of the CAL:

OK, are you ready?  Let’s jump in with the tutorial!  I’ve divided it into easy steps that go along with the video to make it simple to follow along.

*Definitely check out the video to see the hexagon stitch by stitch!

Chain 4 and join into a ring with a slip stitch (or magic ring if you prefer)

Round 1: Chain 4 (counts as a dc), then work (a dc into center of ring, chain 1) 11 times.  Join to close with a slip stitch.

Note: If you want to make round 2 in the same color, simply slip stitch until you reach a ch 1 space and keep going.  If you want to switch colors…cut yarn and join the new yarn at one of the ch 1 spaces and tie securely.

Round 2: Chain 3 and work a dc in the same space.  Chain 1, then work two double crochet in the next (chain 1) space.  Keep doing this all the way around, working 2 dc in each space, then a chain 1.  Join to close with a slip stitch.

Round 3: Chain 3, then work 2 dc in the same space, then chain 1.  In the next space, work three dc, then chain 1.  Keep doing this all the way around the circle…3 dc, then a chain 1 in each space.  Join with a slip stitch to close.

Round 4 (circle becomes hexagon in this round): Chain 3, and in the first space work 2 dc, chain 1, then 3 dc all in the same space.  This creates the first hexagon corner.  In the next space, to work the hexagon side, chain 1, then work 3 dc in next space. Keep going in this manner, working a corner of two “clusters” and a side of 1 cluster (each cluster being separated by a chain 1).  Join with a slip stitch to close.

Note: just be sure there is a ch 1 in between each grouping of 3 dc clusters as you work each round. That is what gives it the pretty spaces in between each cluster and keeps it nice and flat.

Round 5: round 5 is similar to round 4, but with a sequence of a corner, then a side, then another side.  Begin with a chain 4, and in the first space work 2 dc, chain 1, then 3 dc all in the same space.  In the next space, to work the hexagon side, chain 1, then work 3 dc in next space. In the next space, chain 1, then work 3 dc.  Keep going in this manner, working a corner of two “clusters” then a side of 1 cluster, then a side of 1 cluster (each cluster being separated by a chain 1).  Join with a slip stitch to close.

Repeat round 5 (each subsequent round you make will have an extra side as your hexagon grows) until your hexagon is a large as you like (see important sizing information below to be sure your hexagon is made according to your personal measurements)

You can work your stripes how you like…I did mine in this sequence:

  • 3 rounds gray
  • 3 rounds aqua
  • 3 round celery and repeat!

Then just repeat instructions above to make the second hexagon!  Be sure to also mimic color striping order for the second hexagon to match.  They will be seamed side by side, so matching color striping will give a neat “mirror image” look when finished.

Note: When you complete your hexagon, it will look somewhat ruffled, like this:

This is completely normal and is supposed to look like this, when you fold it (see below) if will flatten out perfectly!

OK, let’s talk about sizing!  You’ll need to measure from the base of your neck to your wrist to get an approximate estimate of your hexagon.  Then fold a hexagon so it looks like this:

If you’re having trouble getting your fold to look like this, I highly recommend the video where I’ll walk you through it!

Now measure as shown below and compare with the measurements you took of yourself.  Add more rounds as needed.  Note:  If you’d like your sweater on the slouchy side, add additional rounds beyond your measurements.  I did that and I loved the way it looked…so comfy!

Tip:  You can use clothespins (or chip clips like I did!!) to temporarily “seam” it together…this will allow you to slip it on to get a real idea of the fit and how it will actually feel while wearing.

Below you can see on the finished sweater and how this measurement will translate…see the neck down to the wrist?
