The Strawflowers In The Window 12″ Square is a fun to stitch up and fabulous blanket square that has lots of different stitches and techniques to make for a satisfying and engaging project.

This lovely square is part of the Wedding Blanket CAL, a super fun crochet along with the Joy Creators!  As you may know I am part of the Red Heart Joy Creators, a special team of designers that work with Red Heart and their fabulous yarns.  We have partnered up to collectively create a gorgeous blanket, each of us making a square, to gift to the wonderful person that coordinates the Joy Creator program for her upcoming wedding!  So exciting!

Check out the finished blanket below!  Hop on over to Marly Bird’s site to get links to all of the other squares in the CAL.  Check out the finished blanket below…so pretty!

Instructions For Motifs:

Note: I used one color per round, but feel free to mix it up!

Ch 4, join with a sl st in the furthest ch from hook to form ring.

Round 1: ch 3, then work 2 dc, then a sl st into the center of the ring. Work *(3 dc, sl st) five times for a total of 6 petals. Join with a sl st to close round.

Round 2: Tie on new color onto the back loops at the top of one of the petals. Insert your hook (same place at the top of petal) as if to work a back post stitch and ch 3 (working it this way will make the chain look more consistent with the other stitches). Ch 1, then in the next space (in between petals) work a tr into the center of the ring. Ch 1, then work a bpdc into the center most dc of the next petal. Continue in this manner around the circle, working a tr, ch 1 into the center of the ring (in between petals), then a bpdc, ch 1 in center dc of each petal. Join to close round with a sl st.

Round 3: Tie on a new color into any space and ch 3. In the same space, work a dc, ch 1. Work 2 dc, ch 1 in each space around. Join to close round with a sl st.

Round 4: Tie on a new color into any space and ch 3. In the same space, work a 2 dc, ch 1. Work 3 dc, ch 1 in each space around. Join to close round with a sl st.

Round 5: Tie on a new color into any corner space and ch 3. In the same space, work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1) (this will create first corner of the square). In the next space, work 3 dc, ch 1 (this will create the first side of the square. In the next space, (work 3 dc, ch 1) to make the next side. In the next corner, work 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1). Continue in this manner, working corner, side, side, corner, side, side, etc. Join to close round with a sl st.

Note: For the first motif, work rounds 1-5.  For the second, third, and 4th motifs, work rounds 1-4, then proceed to the JAYGO section below.

How To Join Motifs Together (JAYGO/Join As You Go):

Note: It really helps to keep everything flat as you work, I like to lay mine on a table or lap as I go. Also be sure the right side (side that faced up as you stitched up your squares) is facing upward.

Part 1: Joining the second square onto the first one

Grab a second square and tie on the round 5 color into any corner space of a square you’ve previously made and ch 3. In the same space, work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc). In each side space work (3 dc, ch 1) for each side.  Repeat for each side space until you reach the next corner…this is where we’ll make our first join. In the corner space work 3 dc. Instead of the ch 3, instead work a ch 1, then work a slip stitch into the other square’ corner space, work a ch 1, then work 3 dc back into the square. As you continue down the side of the square, work a slip stitch into the other square instead of a ch 1, and 3 dc into the side spaces of the square. When you get to the next corner, work 3 dc, ch 1, slip stitch into the other square’s corner space, ch 1, then 3 dc into the corner to finish the joining. Work the rest of the square the way you normally would (3 dc, ch 1) in each of the side spaces and 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in the corner). Join with a slip stitch to close round, fasten off yarn and you’re ready to join another square!

Part 2: Joining subsequent squares

As you join the rest of your squares, you’ll basically be repeating part 2 (see above), except the only difference being that sometimes there will be an area where you’ll be joining into a corner that has two or three squares (instead of simply joining into another square). In this case make you slip stitch join in the spaces between the squares (not the corner space). Always go directly across in your join to avoid it being off center. To see this join inaction in greater detail, be sure to check out the video. In the video, I join two squares together, then three squares, then four squares, showing all possible joining scenarios that may arise as you work on your square. The rule of thumb is that when you are not joining, you work a ch 1. When you are at a spot that requires a join, simply replace the ch 1 with a slip stitch into the other square.

*Important: If you have never tried the JAYGO technique, I highly recommend the video.

Instructions for Border:

Round 1: Tie on a new color into any corner space and ch 3. In the same space, work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1) (this will create first corner of the square). *In the next space and in each space across, work (3 dc, ch 1). In the corner space work 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc).  Repeat from *around the entire square.  Note: Also work (3 dc, ch 1) in the spaces in between squares where they are joined.  Join to close round with a sl st.

Round 2: Tie on a new color into any corner space and ch 3. In the same space, work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1) (this will create first corner of the square). *In the next space and in each space across, work (3 dc, ch 1). In the corner space work 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc).  Repeat from *around the entire square.  Join to close round with a sl st.

Round 3: Repeat Round 2.

Round 4: Tie on a new color into any corner space and ch 1.  *Work 3 sc into the corner space, then work a sc into each stitch and space across.  Repeat from star along each side all the way around.  Join to close round with a sl st.

Finishing:

Weave in all ends.
