5 Point Granny Star, Free Crochet Pattern + Video



The 5 Point Granny Star is a fast little project that is fun and versatile to make.  Use them for create a garland, a gift topper, ornament, and lots more!  You can make yours one color, two colors, or even three colors too!

Materials:
  • Small amounts of yarn of your choice (I used Red Heart Super Saver in "Paddy Green" "Cherry Red" and "White"
  • K (6.5 mm) crochet hook (or if using a different yarn, look for the recommended hook size on the yarn label. 
  • Tapestry Needle 
  • Scissors


Sizing:
  • About 6 Inches Tall
  • About 6 Inches Wide

5 Point Granny Star

Instructions:

Ch 4, the join with a skip stitch in the furthest ch from the hook to create a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3, then work 2 dc into the center of the ring. *ch 1, then work 3 dc into the center of the ring.  Repeat from * around 3 more times.  Join with a slip stitch in the top chain where you started the round.

Note: If changing colors, cut the yarn and tie new color into any ch 1 space.  If not changing colors, slip stitch over to the next ch 1 space.

Round 2: Ch 3, then work (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into the ch 1 space.  *Work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next ch 1 space.  Repeat from * around three more times. Join with a slip stitch in the top chain where you started the round.

Note: If changing colors, cut the yarn and tie new color into any of the points of your pentagon shape (not a star shape yet at this point).  If not changing colors, slip stitch over to the nearest pentagon point.

Round 3: Ch 3, then (work 3 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) *Work a slip stitch into the next (side) space, then work (4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) into the next (point) space.  Repeat from * around until your star has 5 points.  Join with a slip stitch in the top chain where you started the round.

Fasten off and weave in and ends that remain.

  1. Hi Jennifer: To make a six point star (star of David), is it as simple as just adding another cluster of 3 dc in the beginning and following the pattern around?

  2. I am making a modern granny stitch US Flag afghan. I need stars only 2 to 3 inches across. Is there a way I could make these that small?
