The Planet Earth Crochet Square is a lovely project made up of smaller motifs joined together to make a fun square. Use it with other squares to make a blanket or stitch one up in cotton to make a unique dishcloth too!

Instructions:

Colors used in the example are shown in the parenthesis of each round.

Round 1 (Mallard):

Ch 4, join with a slip stitch in the chain furthest from the hook with a slip stitch to create a ring.

Round 2 (Mallard):

Ch 3, then work 15 dc into the center of the ring.

Round 3 (Aran):

Tie the new color into back loop of any stitch, then ch 4 (working that first chain around the post as if you were working a bpdc).  Work a (bpdc, ch 1) in each st. Join to close the round with a slip stitch.

Round 4 (Spinach):

Tie the new color into back loop of any stitch, then ch 4 (working that first chain around the post as if you were working a fpdc).  Work a (fpdc, ch 1) in each st. Join to close the round with a slip stitch.

Round 5 (Pewter):

Tie the new color into back loop of any stitch, then ch 4 (working that first chain around the post as if you were working a bpdc).  Work a (bpdc, ch 1) in each st. Join to close the round with a slip stitch.

Round 6 (Mallard):

Tie a new color into any ch 1 space and ch 3. Work (3 dc, ch 1) in the same space. *Work a sl st into the next space, then (4 dc, ch 1) in the next space. Repeat around and join to close round with a slip stitch.

*Repeat three more times to make a total of 4 motifs.  At this point they will be circular motifs, but when we move on to the next section, they will become square motifs.

**The next section we will be using the join as you go technique to connect all of the motifs together.  The first motif will be worked independently.  When the second, third and fourth motifs are worked using the JAYGO technique to join them all together.

Round 7 (Motif 1 only, Aran)

This round worked independently, nothing joined to this one yet: Tie a new color into any of the spaces right under where the slip stitches were worked in the previous round (so you are actually working it into round 5), then chain 3. Work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1) into the same space.  This creates the first corner of the square.  *Work (3 dc, ch 1) in the next (slip stitch/round 5) space (this will create the side of the square).  Work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1) in the next (slip stitch/round 5) space to work the corner of the square.  Repeat from * around, then join to close the round with a slip stitch.

Round 7 (Motif 2 only, Aran)

Joined using the JAYGO (join as you go technique): Grab a second square and tie on the round 2 color into any (slip stitch/round 5) space and ch 3. In the same space, work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1). In the next (slip stitch/round 5) space, work the side as above for motif 1.  When you reach the next corner…this is where we’ll make our first join.

In the space work 3 dc. Instead of the ch 1, work a slip stitch into the other square’ corner space, then work 3 dc back into the square.  Work 3 dc into the next ch 1 space, but also instead of a ch 1, you’ll work a slip stitch join into the other square.  When you get to the next corner, work 3 dc, slip stitch into the other square’s corner space, then 3 dc into the corner to finish the joining, then 3 dc, to complete the corner.  The two squares are now joined side by side. Work the rest of the square the way you normally would (see steps for motif 1) then join with a slip stitch to close round, fasten off yarn and you’re ready to join another square!

Round 7 (Motif 3 and 4-joined using the JAYGO (join as you go technique, Aran)

As you join the rest of your squares, you’ll basically be repeating the instructions for motif 2 (see above), except the only difference being that sometimes there will be an area where you’ll be joining into a corner that has two or three squares (instead of simply joining into another square). In this case make you slip stitch join in the spaces between the squares (not the corner space).

Always go directly across in your join to avoid it being off center. To see this join in action in greater detail, be sure to check out the video. In the video, I join two squares together, then three, then four squares, showing all possible joining scenarios that may arise as you work on your square. The rule of thumb is that when you are not joining, you work a ch 1. When you at a spot that requires a join, simply replace the ch 1 with a slip stitch into the other square.

*Important: If you have never tried the JAYGO technique, I highly recommend the video.

Round 8 (Spinach):

Tie new color into any corner space, then chain 3. In the same space work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1).  *Work (3 dc, ch 1) in the next ch 1 space.  Repeat from * across in each ch 1 space until you get to the next corner. (note: when you get to a place where there a two squares are joined together, instead of working into the corner space of the two squares, work your stitches into the space in between the squares to keep everything more centered looking). Work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) into the corner space.  Continue around the rest of the square, working the sides and corners the same way.  Join to close the round with a slip stitch.

Round 9 (Pewter):

Tie new color into any corner space, then chain 3. In the same space work (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1).  *Work (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch 1 space across.  Work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the next ch 1 space (the corner space) to work the corner of the square.  Repeat from * around, then join to close the round with a slip stitch.

Round 10 (Mallard):

Repeat round 9.

Round 11 (Aran):

Repeat round 9.

Round 12 (Spinach):

Tie new color into any corner space and ch 1.  Work 3 sc into the same space.  *Work a sc into each stitch and into each space across, then work 4 sc into the corner space. Repeat from * around the square and join with a slip stitch to close the round.

Weave in any ends and block if desired. Your Planet Earth Crochet Square is ready to be added to a blanket and lots more!
