Materials:

  • 4.0 mm G crochet hook
  • 800 yards of fingering weight yarn (I used 2 skeins of Vidalana Linen Jewel in “Oasis” by KnitCrate)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Stitch markers to help with seaming

Sizing:

  • 15.5 inches tall
  • 31 inch circumference
  • Straps are 5 inches tall (from from of tank to top of shoulder)
  • Total height is 20.5 inches tall (from bottom edge of tank to top of strap)

Instructions for Square (make 2):

Ch 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Round 1: Chain 5, then work 3 dc into the center of the ring, then ch 2. Work the (3 dc, ch 2) two more times into the center of the ring. Work 2 more dc into the center of the ring, and join with a sl st to close.

Round 2: In any corner, tie on a new color then ch 5.  Work two dc into the center of the ring. Work a dc in each of the next three stitches. To work the corner, work two dc, ch two, then two more dc in the ch 2 space from the previous round. Work the next side the same way, working a dc in the next three stitches, then work the next corner by working 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc all in the same space. Keep working in this manner all the way around the square. At the corner where the round began, work one more dc in the corner space, Join with a sl st to close round.

Round 3: In any corner, tie on a new color then ch 5.  Work 2 dc in the same space. Work a dc in each stitch across the top (there will be seven this time), Work the corner the same way as the previous round (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) Keep going in this manner all the way around, working the corners and the sides as before. When reaching the last corner, work one more dc, and join with a slip stitch to close.

Repeat round 3 until square is as large as you need it to be, and both squares wrap comfortably around the body.  Each side will grow in stitch count as square get larger, but corners are always worked the same way. Be sure the squares are the same size and have the same number of rounds.

Sandwich squares together with right sides facing inward and seam down each side, creating a tube.  Turn right side out and move onto the next part.

Instructions for straps:

Place stitch markers where you want your straps to be.  I placed mine each 10 stitches in from the side seam, and made the strap 8 stitches wide, placing the marker on the other side of the strap.

In the right-most stitch marker of the strap, tie yarn into the space (not the stitch, go in between posts).  Ch 2, then work a hdc into each space across.  Ch 2 and turn.  Work a hdc into the first stitch and in each stitch across.  Repeat this row until strap is as long as you need it to be.  You’ll want it to fit kind of snug in order to hold the top up, but not tightly.  Count the same number of stitches on the back side of the top to locate placement of the strap and seam strap with a whip stitch.  Repeat this for the second strap.

Instructions for ruffles:

Beginning on the outer edge of the back of the strap, Tie yarn into the first stitch.

Row 1: Ch 3 and turn, then work 3 dc into the first side space (they won’t be stitches because it along the edge of the strap) Work 3 dc into each stitch across.

Row 2: Ch 3 and turn, then work 2 dc in each st across.

Rows 3-5: Ch 3 and turn, then work a dc in each st across.

Repeat for other strap.

Finishing:

Weave in any ends that remain and its ready to wear!

  2. I love this design. I have just finished mine, but added a personal touch (added a row of a different colour on the edge of the ruffles and around the bottom of the tank top).
