Art Class Cardi Instructions:
Instructions for the Granny Hexagon (Make 2):
I did a total of 22 rounds for each hexagon, but you can make them any size you like.
Chain 4 and join into a ring with a slip stitch in the chain furthest from the hook.
Round 1:
Chain 4 (counts as a dc), then work (a dc into center of ring, chain 1) 11 times, then join to close with a slip stitch.
Note: If you want to make round 2 in the same color, simply work a slip stitch until you reach a ch 1 space and keep going. If you want to switch colors…cut yarn then join the new yarn at one of the ch 1 spaces and tie securely.
Round 2:
Chain 3 and work a dc in the same space. Next, chain 1, then work two double crochet in the next (chain 1) space. Keep doing this all the way around, working 2 dc in each space, then a chain 1. Join to close with a slip stitch.
Round 3:
Chain 3, then work 2 dc in the same space, then chain 1. In the next space, work three dc, then chain 1. Keep doing this all the way around the circle…3 dc, then a chain 1 in each space. Last, join with a slip stitch to close.
Round 4 (circle becomes hexagon in this round):
Chain 3, and then in the first space work 2 dc, chain 1, then 3 dc all in the same space. This creates the first hexagon corner. In the next space, to work the hexagon side, then chain 1, then work 3 dc in next space. Keep going in this manner, working a corner of two “clusters” and a side of 1 cluster (each cluster being separated by a chain 1). Last, join with a slip stitch to close.
Note: just be sure there is a ch 1 in between each grouping of 3 dc clusters as you work each round. The chain between is what gives it the pretty spaces in between each cluster, but also keeps it nice and flat once folded and seamed later.
Assembly & Seaming:
Begin by folding each hexagon in half so that they make an “L” shape, to get each one ready for seaming. Finally, lay each folded hexagon side by side so that they look like the diagram below:
Once positioned as shown, open up the front and seam down the inside center with a whip stitch. Next, turn the sweater sleeves inside out and seam where indicated in the photo. Additionally, you may find stitch markers work well to hold everything in place as you seam everything together. Sew the tops of the shoulders from neck to wrist all along the top on each side. As you work, be sure to leave the front open for the cardigan, otherwise you’ll have a pullover! Last, I used the whip stitch and then wove in the ends when I was finished. You can see all of the seaming in action in the video too!
When you are finished seaming, you’ll have the basic cardigan shape…it really comes together like magic!! Enjoy your Art Class Cardi!
Have you any tips on keeping this flat? I've followed the pattern and it keeps curling up, despite my best efforts. I've started over again and it's a bit better, but still not flat.
go a needle size up from what the yarn suggests
Is it curling while you are crocheting? I believe that’s how it should be. It doesn’t lie flat until it’s folded like an “L”.
Hi. Do you have stitch counts for rounds 2-3?
Thank you! This is just what I was looking for!
I want to buy this
Love this pattern. The Hobbii yarn is sold out right now and have it on notification when it back in stock. What would you suggest for a substitution? Ty in advanced
