Sweet Shop Hat, Free Crochet Pattern + Video

The Sweet Shop Hat is both fun to crochet and fun to wear too! Lovely rows of star stitch looks like happy ribbon candy. This is a perfect scrap yarn project too, you can mix and match the colors any way you like! The hat is crochet in a rectangle first, seamed, then a super easy brim and big, fluffy pom pom are added at the end.

I am so super excited that this pattern is part of the 2021 Scarf and Hat of the Month CAL with The Stitchin Mommy and Oombawka Design Crochet. Each month three scarf patterns are released at once and you get can get the patterns all for free for a limited time!

The pattern for my hat is available free below and you can get the other two scarf patterns from the CAL at the following links:

Materials:

  • 6.0 mm J crochet hook
  • 465 yards of worsted weight yarn (#4/medium).  I used Red Heart Chic Sheep in Mai Tai, Lace, Polo, Fairy Tale, Mimosa, Creme De Mint, Green Tea, Suede, and Vineyard
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Finished Sizing:

  • 10 inches tall (not including pom pom)
  • 20 inch circumference
  • Pom pom is about 3.5 inches tall

Note: hat size can be customized, see instructions below for more info.

Pattern notes:

  • Hat is constructed by working a rectangle, seaming up the sides, then cinching the top.
  • Starting chain determines height of the hat, number of rows worked determines circumference of hat.
  • sc5togInsert hook in stitch or chain (depending on the row you’re on), yarn over, pull loop through, *insert hook in next stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, repeat from * 4 times total, yarn over, pull through 6 loops on hook.
  • If you are unfamiliar with the star stitch, I highly recommend the video, where I demonstrate everything completely, stitch by stitch.

Instructions:

Ch 37 (any odd number will work)

Note: I did two rows per color, then switched to the next color.

Row 1: sc5tog from 2nd chain, ch 1, *sc5tog from ch 1 (pull up first loop from “eye” of the star, pull up next loop from in between last two spikes worked, pull up next loop from last chain worked, pull up next loop from next chain, pull up loop from next chain (6 loops on the hook). Yarn around hook, bring through all 6 loops, then ch 1.  Repeat from * until you have 1 chain left, then work 1 hdc in that last ch.

Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. *Work 2 hdc in each ch 1 (“eye” of the star) from previous row.  Repeat from * across the row, then 1 hdc in the last stitch.

Row 3: Ch 3 and turn.  sc5tog from 2nd chain (bring up a loop in second ch from the hook, bring up a loop in third ch from the hook, bring up a loop from the first stitch, bring up a loop from each of the next three stitches (6 loops on the hook), yarn around hook and bring through all 6 loops, then ch 1.  Now work the row as we similarly did in row 1…*sc5tog from ch 1 (pull up first loop from “eye” of the star, pull up next loop from in between last two spikes worked, pull up next loop from last stitch worked, pull up next loop from next stitch, pull up loop from next stitch (6 loops on the hook). Yarn around hook, bring through all 6 loops, then ch 1.  Repeat from * until you have 1 chain left, then 1 hdc in that topmost chain from the previous row.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until rectangle is desired hat circumference, ending on row 2 (I made mine about 20 inches long).

*Note: Be sure to change colors when you begin row 3, for the best visual effect.

Assembly & Finishing:

  • Seaming-Cut a piece of yarn about 18-24 inches long and turn rectangle inside out (stars facing inward) and line up the starting edge to the last row edge worked.  Next, thread a tapestry needle and work a whip stitch into both layers of each stitch across, all the way across the row.  As you work your slip stitch seam, be sure edges stay lined up as your work.  Weave in ends.
  • Add a hat brim: I color of your choice (I chose the same color as the pom pom to kind of tie it all together.  I worked my brim by doing 3 sc into each star stitch stripe (one to the right of the eye, one in the eye, and one just to the left of the eye.  Round 1 of brim: Tie brim color yarn into the hole just to the right of the eye and ch 1.  Work a sc into the eye, then a sc in the hole just to the leftof the eye.  *Hop over to the next color stripe and work a sc in the hole to the right of the eye, sc into the eye, sc in the hole to the left of the eye.  Repeat from from * around to the end of the round.  Join to close round with a slip stitch. Round 2 of the brim: Ch 3, then work a dc into each stitch around.  Join to close round in the third ch up from the starting chain with a slip stitch.  Round 3 of the brim: To begin the round, work a fpdc around the ch 3 from the previous round.  *Work a bpdc into the next stitch, then work a fpdc into the next stitch.  Repeat from * to end of the round.  Join to close the round with a slip stitch.  Round 4 of the brim: *Work a fpdc into the fpdc from the previous round, then work a bpdc into the bpdc from the previous round. Repeat from * to end of the round.  Join to close the round with a slip stitch. Round 5-6 of the brim: Repeat round 4.
  • Cinching the top-Turn the hat inside out.  Using a matching piece of yarn 18-24 inches long, thread a tapestry needle and weave in and out all the way around the top edge of the hat around the top edge of the tube.  Pull ends tightly to cinch up the hat and tie a strong knot to secure.  At this point you can weave in all of the ends or trim them (they will be on the inside of the hat and not showing)
  • Making the pompom-Cut a piece of yarn about 12-18 inches long.  Wrap yarn around all four of your fingers (I wrapped mine about 250 times).  Slip bundle carefully off of your hand, then tie the strand of yarn around the bundle.  Tie tightly.  Cut all loops from your pom pom, leaving the two long strands to act as a “handle”.  Trim pom pom down to give it a neat, dense look, leaving the two long ends.  Tie pom pom to the top of hat with a strong knot and trim ends from the inside of hat.
