Crochet Star Stitch (Photo + Video Tutorial)

Crochet Star Stitch

The crochet star stitch is a lovely and cozy crochet stitch full of fun texture!  Once you get the hang of crocheting it, it’s pretty easy to do too!  Below is a both full video tutorial and a complete photo tutorial where I walk you through every step of the way.

Two tips for the Crochet Star Stitch:

  • Because this stitch can be dense, try going up a hook size to give the crocheted fabric a little more flexibility.  You can experiment with your particular yarn you will be using.
  • To complete the full star look, always end on row 2 to give it a more finished/completed look.
  • If you need to change colors, change colors after row 2 for nice, clean stripes of color.

Once you’ve mastered the Crochet Star Stitch, try my Sweet Shop Hat & Scarf!  Both are free crochet patterns and include a full video tutorial too.

For this tutorial I’m using an N hook and some bulky weight yarn.  However, you can try any weight you like just look for the recommended hook size on the yarn label and try going up one more size to keep things loosened up a bit.

To begin row 1,

we’ll put a slip knot on our hook,

Next, work any odd number of chains (for the swatch I’m making, I did 15)

Next work a sc5tog from 2nd chain from the hook.   To do this, insert hook in the second chain from the hook and bring up a loop.  Next chain, bring up a loop, then repeat until you have 6 loops on your hook.

Wrap yarn around hook then bring it through all 6 loops on the hook,

Then chain 1 to close the star.  1 star complete!

Now we’re ready to work our second star,  insert the hook into the “eye” (center hole of the star) and bring up a loop (2 loops are on the hook),

Go in between the last two “spikes” of the star and bring up a loop (3 loops on the hook),

Next, pull up a loop from last chain worked (4 loops on the hook),

Insert hook into next chain and bring up a loop (5 loops on the hook),

Insert hook into next chain and bring up a loop (6 loops on the hook),

Wrap yarn around hook and bring it through all 6 loops.

Chain 1 to close the star (1 loop on the hook).

Repeat these steps across to make more stars, always beginning each one in the eye of the star you just finished.

At the end of the row, you’ll have just one chain left.  Work a hdc into the chain.

For row two,

chain 2 and turn,

Work 2 hdc into the “eye” of the star from the previous row,

Then work 2 hdc in each eye across,

Finish row 2 by working 1 hdc into the last stitch of the row.

For row 3,

chain 3 and turn,

Insert hook in second chain from the hook and bring up a loop (2 loops on the hook)

Work the hook into the next chain and bring up a loop (3 loops on the hook),

Place hook into the first stitch and bring up a loop (4 loops on the hook),

Insert hook into the next stitch and bring up a loop (5 loops on the hook),

Insert hook into the next stitch and bring up a loop (6 loops on the hook),

Wrap yarn around hook and bring it through all 6 loops.

Then chain 1 to close the star.

Now we’re ready to work our second star,  insert the hook into the “eye” (center hole of the star) and bring up a loop (2 loops are on the hook),

Chain 1 to close the star.

Repeat these steps across to make more stars, always beginning each one in the eye of the star you just finished.

Finish row 3 by working 1 hdc into the last stitch of the row.

To continue, repeat rows 2 and 3 until it is as long/tall as you like!  Remember to end on row 2 for the most finished and neatest look.  Happy crocheting!
