The closed shell stitch is a beautiful and easy crochet stitch full of lovely texture! Once you get the hang of crocheting it, it's pretty easy to do too! Below is a both full video tutorial and a complete photo tutorial where I walk you through every step of the way.
Once you've mastered this stitch, try my Cloud Nine Scarf! This is a free crochet pattern that includes a full video tutorial too:
For this tutorial I'm using an L hook and some bulky weight yarn. However, you can try any weight you like just look for the recommended hook size on the yarn label.
To begin, we'll put a slip knot on our hook, then work the chain. This stitch is a multiple of 6+1. For the swatch in this tutorial, I did 19 chains.
Next, work 2 double crochet into the 4th chain from the hook,
Skip 2 chains, then work a single crochet into the next chain.
Skip 2 chains, then work 4 double crochet into the next chain,
Skip 2 chains then work a single crochet into the next chain,
Skip 2 chains then work 4 double crochet into the next chain.
Skip two chains and then in the very last chain, work a single crochet to finish off the row.
To begin row 2, chain 3 and turn.
Work 2 double crochet into the single crochet from the previous row,
Work a single crochet into the center space of the shell from previous row (area in between the posts-right in the center),
Next, work 4 double crochet into the single crochet from the previous row (stitch in between the two shells),
Work a single crochet into the center space of the shell from previous row (area in between the posts-right in the center),
Work 4 double crochet into the single crochet from the previous row (stitch in between the two shells),
Work a single crochet into the turning chain space to finish the row.
To continue, repeat row 2 until it is as tall as you like! Happy crocheting!
