Candy Hearts Tote Bag, Free Crochet Pattern + Full Video Tutorial

The Candy Hearts Tote Bag is a fun and super squishy bag that is quick to stitch up.  Pretty pastel rainbow stripes are topped with bright pink handles and sweet little heart appliques.  Make it for your daily tote, or use it to gift a valentine to someone special too!

Materials:
  • 6.5 mm K crochet hook
  • 280 yards of super bulky #6 weight yarn (I used Honey Bunny by Hobbii in Lemon Curd, Peach, Candy Floss, Pink, and Lilac)
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • 4 removable stitch markers
        Sizing:
        • 14 inches wide
        • 26 inches tall from top of handles to bottom of bag
        • 14 tall (bag body without handles)
        • Hearts are each 2 inches wide and 2 inches tall

*Note-I worked three rounds of each color.

Instructions for main part of the bag:

        Ch 70

Join in the furthest chain from the hook with a slip stitch.  Be careful not to twist the chain.

Round 1: Ch 2 then work a hdc into each chain.  Join to close the round with a slip stitch.

Round 2: Ch 2 then work a hdc into each stitch.  Join to close the round with a slip stitch.

Repeat round 2 until the tote is about the same height as the width.

        Instructions for handles:

        Handle round 1:

With the handle color, repeat round two once more then place markers as shown below.  I placed two in the front (one where the handle begins and one where it ends) 24 stitches apart.  I did the same on the back too.  See photo below:

        Handle round 2:

Slip stitch over to the first stitch marker, the work a hdc into the stitch with the stitch marker, then a hdc into each stitch until you get to the next stitch marker.  Work a hdc into that stitch.  Next, chain 60, then skip over to the stitch with the next stitch marker, then work a slip stitch into the stitch with the stitch marker. Work a hdc into each stitch until you get to the next stitch marker.  Work a hdc into that stitch.  Next, chain 60, then skip over to the stitch with the next stitch marker, then work a slip stitch into the stitch with the stitch marker. Work a hdc into each stitch until you get to the end, then work a sl st into the topmost chain.

Handle round 3:  Chain 2 then work a hdc into each stitch and chain around.  Join to close the round with a sl st into the topmost chain.

Handle Round 4: Chain 2 then work a hdc into each stitch around.  Join to close the round with a sl st into the topmost chain.

Fasten off, weave in any ends that remain, then you're ready to add some hearts!

Instructions for one round hearts (make 3):

Chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Round 1: Into the center of the ring, work a (dc, tr, dc, sl st, dc, tr, dc, 3 sc, tr, 3 sc, join to close heart with a slip stitch and fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming.

Sew hearts to bag as shown, weave in any ends and it's ready to go!
