Materials:

  • Small amounts of worsted weight yarn (yarn used for the votives shown is Lion Brand Heartland in "Yosemite" (orange shade) and "Joshua Tree" (green shade)
  • Buttons of your choice (make sure they can fit through decorative holes)
  • H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Glass Jelly Jars

Sizing (unbuttoned and lying flat):

  • Smaller version: 9 inch circumference, 1.5 inches tall
  • Larger version: 9 inch circumference, 3 inches tall

Note: votive sleeve has lacy decorative holes that double up as button holes.  This makes it fully adjustable for a more snug fit if needed.

Instructions for Smaller Version:

Ch 7

Row 1: In the 5th ch from the hook work (2 dc, ch 1, 2dc) all in the same ch.  Skip the next ch and in the last ch, work a dc.

Row 2: ch 3 and turn.  In the ch 1 space from the previous row (center of each "v") work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc).  Then work a dc in the turning chain space.

Repeat row 2 until votive sleeve is desired length, and can be snugly buttoned around jar.  I made mine 9 inched long and it fit well with no slipping, but try it out on your particular jar before fastening off.

Instructions for Larger Version:

Ch 11

Row 1: In the 5th ch from the hook work (2 dc, ch 1, 2dc) all in the same ch.  Skip 3 ch and work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) all in the same chain.   Skip the next ch and in the last ch, work a dc.

Row 2: ch 3 and turn.  In the ch 1 space from the previous row (center of the "v") work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc).  Repeat for the next "v"  Then work a dc in the turning chain space.

Repeat row 2 until votive sleeve is desired length, and can be snugly buttoned around jar.  I made mine 9 inched long and it fit well with no slipping, but try it out on your particular jar before fastening off.

Finishing & Assembly:

Weave in all ends.  Sew a button to the beginning edge.  Use decorative holes at other end as a buttonhole.  To achieve a more snug fit around the jar, simply button one hole closer in.

Caution:  Do not allow yarn to come into contact with fire, as it could melt/burn.  Always extinguish flame completely after using.  Please keep away from kids and pets and definitely do not leave unattended.
